Increasing the numbers of young people choosing to enter the construction sector and ensuring they have the right foundation to support long-term progression opportunities is at the heart of work with Onsite Construction T-level students.

Supporting Onsite Construction T-level graduates

The Onsite Construction T-level presents a robust pathway for students who aspire to enter skilled trades such as carpentry & joinery and bricklaying and progress through the industry, equipping young people with a comprehensive understanding of the sector and practical skills. The first T-level graduates completed in 2023 and have opportunities to progress into employment or apprenticeship gaining further on-the-job experience that complements their college-based learning.

Individuals completing an approved apprenticeship in Construction are eligible for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Gold Skilled Worker card, demonstrating their onsite competency. The card is not available for young people studying any college-based course. However, a pilot programme has been established to deliver in-work induction training for T-level students soon after completion of their T-level studies.

The induction training builds on the skills T-level students have developed during their course and industry placement. The programme incorporates an assessment equivalent to an End Point Assessment (EPA) with the pilot recognised by CSCS, ensuring that young people can validate their skills effectively to secure their Gold Skilled Worker card.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between a number of partners including the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), NOCN, CSCS with support from the Department for Education (DfE). Feedback from employers has been integral to shaping the programme, building strong partnerships between FE providers and local employers, and enhancing young people’s career prospects with a clear pathway to the Gold Card.

Looking ahead, this approach supports students who want to enter the construction sector to achieve their aspirations and progress quickly. It has the potential to meet industry needs and contribute supporting the UK’s ambitious construction targets.
