Mentoring and coaching for teachers in FE – our latest research

Mentoring and coaching for teachers in the further education and skills sector in England is our latest report exploring the role of mentoring in the professional development and training of teachers in FE.

The research, led by Professor Andrew Hobson and Dr Brownen Maxwell, sought to:

- Examine the strengths and potential limitations of institution-based mentoring in FE
- Explore the need for external mentor support for FE teachers
- Identify factors that may influence uptake of mentor programmes

The report makes a number of recommendations, including: all teachers having access to a subject-specialist external mentor; the introduction of a national framework and/or qualifications for mentoring; and encouraging collaboration between FE providers to ensure availability of trained mentors.

Both the full report and associated summary report are available to download. If you would like a hard copy of the summary report, please email hannah.stanwix@gatsby.org.uk
